Throwback from the 80’s! All you need is French Onion Soup mix, sour cream and mayonnaise to make this utterly addictive French Onion Dip that is way better than store bought dip. This is the ONLY recipe I make using a store bought packet mix – a testament to how good it is!
I really don’t think I’m a food snob – hey, I’m that person who has confessed to doing the KFC and Maccers drive through of shame. But I was brought up with food made from scratch and my mother ended up doing a great job of brain washing me because I never use store bought packet mixes or recipe bases. It just doesn’t taste right to me, it has an edge of artificial-ness, and usually they are too salty.
This French Onion Dip is the one exception to my rule.
It’s made using French Onion Soup mix. And I love it. I don’t care what anyone says. And I bet my mum would love this too!
Even though it starts with a packet soup mix, this is still way better than French Onion Dip bought in a tub. For one thing, it’s really soft – French Onion Dip sold in tubs are usually quick thick unless left out to soften. And it tastes less artificial than store bought dip. I think the sour cream goes a long way to add an element of freshness to this dip.
This is a quick, short post because it’s an extra recipe for today, a reader request! So I’m signing off. Hope you enjoy! Nagi xx

Easy French Onion Soup Dip

- Serve with your favorite chips!
Hi Nagi,
I enjoy and use many of your recipes. I hope you won’t mind one suggestion/correction: Lipton soup mix was introduced in 1952. Instead of “throwback to the 80’s,”“Throwback to the ‘50’s” is more accurate.
I’ve been making plain ol’ soup mix & sour cream dip for years; but this is MUCH better! The addition of mayo makes it creamier & the flavors are better balanced. GREAT!!
Very nice dip, I added some crispy bacon bits and some chopped chives
Amazing! Hands down the best French onion dip ever!
tastes great
Delicious!
So simple and easy to make; the Mayo was a nice touch on the classic soup mix/sour cream hack for a more creamy texture, yum!
Halved the qty it to keep fresh longer and make a more “standard” dip size and kept the other soup pack half for another batch later!
Hi Nagi, thank you for your wonderful inspirational cooking activities. Re the french onion soup dip, there used to be one with cheese and chives which was also great, however continental discontinued the packet soup mix cheese and chives . They have refused to reinstate it in the past. Can you re create this one please. Kind Regards Karen
Hi Karen, what exactly is it that you’re after? A copy of the soup mix? N x
I would like to ask Nagi if she can make the Cheese and Chive dip that used to be possible with a packet of Cheese and chive soup. I really miss the taste of a Cheese and Chive dip.
Hi can this be made the night before ??
Yes definitely Regina!
Can you make this then put into the cob loaf. If so do you then bake the cob loaf in the oven or is it better to just put in cold??
Hi Jackie – not this one unfortunately, it would get too runny if heated – N x
I added a little marinated feta & creme fresh as I didn’t have sour cream also some fresh dill &tabasco it was delicious
Thanks for reminding me about this dip from my childhood
Sounds great Estelle, I’ll have to try it!
Hello Nagi, just wondering if this would work using full fat greek yoghurt instead of sour cream please??
Hi Jessie, yes should do!
I have always made french onion dip with sour cream, but adding mayo sounds fabulous, will certainly try this. thanks for all your recipes i love them all.
Hope you do!! I LOVE THIS DIP!! 😂
Hi Nagi
I wanted to make this but there wasn’t any onion soup mix, of any sort, on sale in my supermarket in the UK, so I used a Coleman’s onion sauce sachet instead………….Brilliant & just as good as I remembered from the 50’s !!!!!!!!
Dip made with onion soup mix and a tin of reduced cream is considered a Kiwi Classic. This is better… *(hides)*
I had to fudge the amounts a bit, because Maggi French Onion Soup sachets are only 29g but the sour cream came in a 2x150g twin pack so I winged it with about 1/3 cup of mayo and it TASTES DELICIOUS. Creamy, savoury, tart and perfect with salted kettle chips.
And I’m making your baked mac and cheese for dinner later so it is Nagi Night at our house!
Blessed Nagi Grace
Thank you for all the food
Baked, sauted and stewed
Oh, but now we have chewed
On everything so delicious
Please answer all my wishes
Make someone else do the dishes
Amen!
No need to hide Chris!!!! I love hearing about variations from all over, especially from our Kiwi neighbours! N xx
Your onion dip is amazing! It’s been some time I haven’t made it.
Oh là là my mouth is watering!! I need to make it again!!! Thanks Nagi!!
It is SO SO GOOD! I just can’t deny myself! 🙂 N xx
It looks very rich French onion soup, I have never tried it but this time I will try it myself, thank you very much for the recipe.
Hmmm, actually, I’d say this is one of the lighter dips around! Most dips are made with cream cheese which is much heavier than sour cream! 🙂 N xx
Hi Nagi,
The 80’s?? I was making this way back in the early 70’s (really dating myself!) and I’m sure I didn’t discover it first. However, we left out the mayo (too fattening) and sometimes for a change, we would add a tin of tiny shrimp. Delicious!
Love all your recipes!
Probably even from the 60’s!!!! It’s timeless in my books! ❤️
It goes back even further, actually. I had this as a kid in California as far back as the late 50s! No mayo though– we just mixed the soup packet with sour cream and dug in. With a bag of salty potato chips, absolutely addictive.
YUM! I also make it with yoghurt sometimes! N xx
My mum also used to make this dip for any gathering, except instead of mayo she used greek yoghurt which made it a little less “heavy”. This and spinach cobb loaf will always have a special place in my heart (tummy).
Oooh great tip! I will have to try this with yoghurt! ❤️
Hi nagi I would like to make the bacon Cobb recipe of your can i use tuna and corn instead will that work thank you Kerryann love your recipes please keep them going really enjoy
Bacon Cobb recipe??? OH! You mean the dip? If so – YES to tuna and corn!!

Enjoy the rest of you’re wekend x
I’m SO GLAD YOU DID!!!! Sometimes I need a prod to share recipes I’m shy about and I seem to always be proved wrong – like this one! Readers are LOVING IT!!! N xx
I grew up with this dip – a party at our house wasn’t a party without it. And when I have made it here, no one can believe how easy it is to make! It is highly addictive.
Yes yes YES!!! I’m so glad to hear that, I felt some sort of secret shame sharing this but I just love it!!
Never feel any shame, Nagi! And the recipe dates from the 1950s in the USA – much as I hate to admit it 🙂
