A simple taco sauce that’s quick to make and rivals store bought! You know exactly what goes in it, keeps for ages, and is terrific to serve with any type of tacos or as a dipping sauce for burritos, to drizzle over nachos or even as a dipping sauce for chips!
QUICK AND EASY TACO SAUCE
This is a quick and easy taco sauce that’s very versatile. It tastes as good as anything you can buy from the stores with the added bonus that you know exactly what goes in it, and you can customise it to your taste.
Just place the ingredients in a saucepan and simmer for 10 minutes to bring the flavour together. That’s it!
This makes more than enough for one batch of tacos – but it keeps perfectly either in the fridge for up to a week or in the freezer for months.
USES FOR TACO SAUCE
Use this Taco Sauce for any type of tacos, including:
-
Beef Tacos – old school style made with ground beef / mince
It’s also terrific used as a dipping sauce for Burritos (also see Shredded Beef Burritos), Quesadillas, drizzling over Nachos or simply using as a dip for corn chips.
If you can think of other ways to use this, drop a message in the comments section below and I’ll update the post – and thank you in advance! – Nagi x

I wrote it out, am going to make it and get some of the ingredients next time at grocery. I found you can get the soft taco shells; and seasoning, but needed the sauce recipe…Thx, and will make a batch in the next few weeks…

Tomato based sauces salsas and Mariners don’t last very long in the refrigerator. They develop a mold or a white yeast on the surface even when refrigerated. I make your taco sauce and then I add a little potassium sorbate that you can get at Amazon. It’s a preservative that’s used in wine making
Prudence says
This recipe is simple and delicious! Thanks Nagi
Tash says
Hi Nagi- could you use fresh garlic and fresh onion if you don’t have the powder version? If yes, what quantities?
Katrina says
Wow Nagi this taco sauce is great. I made it to use in burritos and there was heaps. Last night I used the left over taco sauce on pizza bases with spicy beef mince, cheese and pickled jalepenos., Nacho style pizza with spoons of guac and sour cream on top.

THIS IS AMAZING! I will never buy store-bought again. I did add a small can of green chili’s and it was perfect. I planned to freeze about half of what I made, but we ended up eating it all. Crowd favorite and a keeper for sure!! Thank you!

If you know and have had Del Taco sauce the milk is my favorite. How would you say this taste in comparison?
John says
Super good if you actually want spicy pasta sauce.
Nagi says
Aww no John! How could anyone mistake this for pasta sauce with the flavours in this?? 🙂 N x

Aaaaa me too. The passata I used has a very pronounced Italian flavor. No matter what I added i couldn’t mask the flavor. I turned it into a delishus soup with a box of good chicken broth. Please tell us which brand to use
Jenny says
Leggo’s classic passata is just tomato – I know they also have one with added basil, so maybe check it’s a plain passata.
Holly says
Hi Marianne,
I use La San Marzano brand of passata, Mutti is good too. The ingredients should just be strained tomatoes and maybe salt – nothing more.
Cheers,
Holly 🙂

Hi Nagi,
You asked for suggestions on other ways to use that sauce, here you go.
Eggs based recipes including: omelettes, scrambled eggs, huevos rancheros, Mexican version of baked eggs, Mexican breakfast casserole
Main meat dishes: You can stew/braise any kind of meat within the sauce and come up with recipes from there, Mexican lasagna (I’ve made one myself using a doctored enchilada sauce, but this sauce would work too), dinner casserole, Mexican meatballs, meatloaf.
Dipping sauce for chicken wings,, adjust the ingredients a bit, thin the sauce to turn it into a rich hearty soup.
I hope my vast imagination has inspired you. These are all suggestions off the top of my head, I’m sure I can come up with more if I were to think about it more. 🙂
Bill says
No vinegar in this sauce?
Nagi says
Hi Bill! Not for this one. I would use vinegar if I was making it with something sweeter like ketchup. 🙂
